Who Will Win Browser War 2.0 ?

Few days back I was in Bangalore for TechEd, and saw the demo of what IE9 could do and started wondering about who will win browser war this time, here is what I think.

Nobody.

We all know who won the first web browser war, but that was then and the real fight was between just two Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator and only one platform.

Now there are 5 major contenders,

  1. Chrome
  2. Firefox
  3. Internet Explorer
  4. Safari
  5. Opera

And two major platforms desktop and mobile.

Personally I am only excited about the fight between Chrome, Internet Explorer and Firefox, and to see how they push web forward.

So what will really happen?

Well, they are all going to end up following the same common standards for which HTML 5 is the blanket term. There will be some hiccups/incompatibilities before this happens, but it will happen.

To me this is the only outcome that makes the most economic sense, as they(Microsoft, Google, Apple) all move there native application to web they will want to make sure that the features they are going to use is available on all the browsers as part of standards.

While right now focus of war is on desktop browser in a year or two it will shift to mobile(phones and tablets) and this is when it will become even more interesting.

What do you think, do you really see a single winner in this war of web?

  1. Well, I think there may not be a single winner but Firefox and Chrome will have an upper hand than IE because IE is not so flexible for customization and changes as the rest do and they follow more guidelines and are more user friendly than IE. Among them I think Firefox has yet better things than chrome because it has more features and customize options than chrome, plus more plugins, user-friendly and user specific ,…. but thumbs down for IE !!

Many people have left using IE and even many websites and companies don’t support previous versions of IE and still they are not so serious regarding IE…

  2. I disagree with you, there is a war while Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s IE pushing different directions. MS trying to push web where they want it to while Chrome goes with the mainstream. IE9 does not support HTML5, this probably means MS working on their own direction like they always do. Strange but MS probably going to shut down Silverlight project in favor of HTML5 one which doesn’t seem right if their latest browser barely support HTML5 and CSS3.

Chrome clearly wins any battle as Google is main source for most of information on the web, Chrome is fast, Chrome supports almost every possible possible technology that ppl dig into and it has easy to install plug-ins.

I guess only who can fight Google is Facebook which can favor some browser like they unfavored IE6 in the past.

  3. Definitely its Google Chrome. There will be close call in between Chrome & Firefox. But the way chrome is being released its difficult to beat the CHROMIUM…

  4. The ‘war’ is only legit as long the ‘device’ isn’t standardized. I see this war being won by the fellow who owns the hardware+Software convergence. Basically take on Apple in the open world.

With Google’s acquisition, I’m very tempted to believe I’ll be sitting on a machine with all my data on the Google cloud.

That in my opinion will end the browser war forever – at least on the computing front. On the mobile front – Android will choose. Check this out – http://linkd.in/ofN0VD

I give it 18 months (Sometime when GooMOT will come up with the 2nd version of their upgraded Xoom tablet. Right now it’s pathetic.)
